What secrets are still kept in blockade archives and why there is a fatal confusion with lists?
How many people died in the siege of Leningrad – we still do not know the exact number. It is clear that the majority was not killed by shells and bombs. Those are only three percent of the total. The others died from hunger. Tens of thousands were missing. And now, almost seventy years later it turns out that the fates of many of them, in fact, are known. How did this happen? The reason is simple: discrepancies in archival documents. In one document a solder might be registered as missing. And the other list indicates where he is buried. Only now these files are carefully being checked against. And most importantly, they will soon be freely accessible. Sergei Zagatsky not only unraveled this complicated archival story. He himself learned the fate of his own relatives. |
