30 June 2017

June 30, 2017 in the "Sholokhov-Center" of the M. A. Sholokhov State Museum-Reserve (the Rostov region) was opened the exhibition "Journey around the World" from the funds of the Museum of the World Ocean (Kaliningrad).

The unique exhibition tells about sea round-the-world expeditions, discoveries of famous pioneers and naval commanders, achievements of sea science and how Russia has become a great sea power.

Throughout the history of mankind, travel has been one of the main ways of obtaining information about particular countries, nature, general character and outlines of the Earth's surface. The labors and exploits of many brave navigators and travelers, merchants and missionaries, military and scientists accumulated knowledge about the peoples of distant countries, their customs and ways of doing business. Sea voyages in the XVI-XVIII centuries radically changed the idea of the world. With the development of physical science and the improvement of instruments, travel became more and more like research expeditions.

Russian marine round-the-world expeditions of the XIX century played an outstanding role in Russian history, and their achievements took a worthy place in world science. From the expedition of I. F. Kruzenshtern and Y. F. Lisyansky, a brilliant era of Russian ocean trade and scientific voyages begins.

Round-the-world expedition "Challenger" in the second half of the XIX century made a revolution in the science of the Earth. There was a completely new approach to the study of the World Ocean and its depths. In the XX century, outstanding discoveries were made on the Soviet research vessel “Vityaz”.

The exhibition includes a model of a sailboat, taxidermy sculptures and moist preparations of sea animals, shells of mollusks, geological samples, objects of ethnography and life of the Polynesian islands, navigation instruments and equipment, samples of amber and objects of decorative and applied art, painting and graphics of marine painters S. V. Pen, E. V. Voishvillo and B. M. Starodubtsev. The exhibition is complemented by the works of modern photo artists.

The exhibition will run till September 3, 2017.
