Masterpieces of the Russian cinema of the early 20th century are for the first time available on the Internet

The Presidential Library published on its website the masterpieces of Russian cinema of the 20th century produced by the «Trading House "A. Khanzhonkov and K°"», “The Brothers Pathe” and "The Globe" as well as by "Soyuzdetfilm" provided by the Gosfilmofond of Russia. Now, the classics of the domestic film industry are available to all. The earliest film dates back to 1909, the latest - to 1941.

The material provided for readers of the first national electronic library of Russia, which is now available at www.prlib.ru, is first presented on the Internet. According to the Presidential Library representatives these are true masterpieces, which are monuments of origin of the national cinema and its development, during the war years too.

Authors of the unique black-and-white films of the early 20th century, delivered to the Presidential Library, were such talented artists as Alexander Khanzhonkov, Alexander Goncharov, Andrei Gromov, Peter Chardynin, Eugene Bauer and others. The films produced at the time were adaptations of Russian classics, folk tales, songs and romances. Therefore, among the film materials, which have joined the Presidential Library collections, there are films based on this or that famous work. Among them: dumb feature short films "Bella", "Vadim", "Boyar Orsha" produced by the «Trading House "A. Khanzhonkov and K°"». In addition, Alexander Khanzhonkov produced the silent black-and-white film of 1914 "Glory – for us, death – for the enemies" by Russian director Yevgeny Bauer.  

The famous film production companies “Brothers Pathe” and “The Globe” present a dumb feature film “Down with the German yoke”, filmed in the style of a political cartoon. The history of creation of the other newly arrived film “Battle film collection. N 7”, dedicated to the Great Patriotic War is also of interest. The movie was shot at the Moscow studio "Soyuzdetfilm" during the Nazi offensive on Moscow. The picture consists of six short stories telling about not invented struggle against the fascist invaders.

The Presidential Library has a large array of video materials. Films provided by Gosfilmofond will be an important addition to the available audiovisual materials, which are available on the website of the first electronic national library of Russia.
