The Presidential Library invites students to attend multimedia lessons of literature

20 February 2015

Multimedia lessons of literature of the Presidential Library, launched in early February, aroused great public interest. In less than a month literature lessons were attended by about 600 students from 17 schools in St. Petersburg and Leningrad region. On the whole, 58 schools have applied to take part in the multimedia lesson of literature.

The lesson was developed by methodologists of the Presidential Library to mark the Year of Literature and includes a comprehensive program: visit to the exhibition, creative tasks for the participants and the presentation of their works. The exhibition features in virtual form unique materials on the relationship of historical facts and literary images in the works of Russian writers, as well as striking examples of how differently the writers treated the same historical event and influenced public opinion. Students learn about the reign of Ivan the Terrible - one of the most controversial figures in Russian history. A particular part of the exhibition is devoted to a crucial period in the history of Russia - the reign of Peter I. The exhibition also highlights other figures of Russian history, such as: Boris Godunov, Alexander I, Nicholas II, Joseph Stalin. The exhibition also features the reflection in literature of such historical events as: The War of 1812, the World War I, the 1917 Revolution, the Civil War. On the eve of the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory, the Great Patriotic War is in special focus.

In the electronic reading room, students are told about the ways of working with the Presidential Library holdings and the digital collection "Fact and image of the Russian history in the works of Russian writers" posted on its website. Students then have an opportunity to express themselves creatively and to prepare a presentation using materials from the collections of the Presidential Library. To do this, in a limited amount of time they need to correlate images of historical figures and events, portraits of writers, illustrations and quotations from literary works with a particular historical epoch.

Among the topics: "The formation of a centralized state during the 16th -17th centuries," "The formation and development of the Russian Empire in the 18th century," "Patriotic War of 1812," "Russia at the Crossroads" and "Russia in the 20th century." In the multimedia hall of the Presidential Library students are invited to make their presentations and choose the best one by means of electronic voting. All the materials can be saved for later use.

It is not the first time that the Presidential Library organizes multimedia lessons. In the 2013/2014 academic year, the library held multimedia lessons timed to the 20th anniversary of the Constitution of the Russian Federation. In the future we plan to conduct remote multimedia lessons in other cities through a network of remote electronic reading rooms and regional centers of the Presidential Library. To date, there are about 120 of them in 64 subjects of the Russian Federation.
