Premiere of the film Daniil Granin. The Last Interview to be held at the Presidential Library

23 September 2021

On September 23, 2021 at 15:00 the Presidential Library provides a cinema club meeting, which will present the premiere of the documentary Daniil Granin. The Last Interview.

“Daniil Granin gave me twenty years of friendship”, - says the director and scriptwriter of the film, St. Petersburg writer Dmitry Karalis. “My published diaries feature records of our meetings and conversations. Even more - not recorded, but remained in the memory. A poignant interview in March 2017 - about the war, the siege, human relations - was the last in the life of the writer. This is what the film is based on".

As part of the interview, the famous writer and public figure Daniil Alexandrovich Granin speaks about the phenomenon of the siege of Leningrad, about the special Leningrad character that developed during the war; talks about the history of writing the story My Lieutenant and about The Siege Book created together with Ales Adamovich, and also spotlights the main qualities brought up in people by the siege and culture of the city, which should be passed on from generation to generation. “The quiet heroism of the Leningraders”,  according to Granin, raised the human spirit above the flesh and won in circumstances in which victory was impossible.

Correspondent Pavel Vinogradov in an article dedicated to the film Daniil Granin. The Last Interview noted: "Filmed with a minimum of artistic tweaks, the film leaves, nevertheless, an amazing impression. On the screen, an old, tired, but very wise man talks about his life - the siege, the writing. The interview is interrupted by archival footage of the war, modern filming of St. Petersburg streets and statements about Granin phenomenon of the most famous Petersburgers – President of Russia Vladimir Putin, head of the Book Union Sergei Stepashin, leader of the Fair Russia party Sergei Mironov, director of the State Hermitage Museum Boris Piotrovsky, People's Artist of the Russian Federation ... On the whole, this is a historical document that accurately records a terrible and glorious era".

Presidential Library's cinema club guests will be film participants - members of the writer's family, historians, representatives of the Administration of St. Petersburg, the City Legislative Assembly, the media, veterans of the siege, cultural workers, etc.

Before the premiere, viewers will also see fragments of the feature film Corridor of Immortality and the documentary The Siege Blood, filmed according to the script by Dmitry Karalis.
