The Presidential Library to tell about Russia’s very first client of the savings banks

15 September 2021

On September 15, 2021, at 13:00, the Presidential Library will host an online lecture The first depositor of the savings bank - the second in a series dedicated to the 180th anniversary of the savings business in Russia. The first lecture was dedicated to the director of St. Petersburg and then Russian savings banks from 1872 to 1893, Peter Alexandrovich Efremov.

On November 12, 1841 Emperor Nicholas I signed a decree on the establishment of savings banks in Russia "for the delivery of funds to savings through the correct and profitable way". Having appeared as a small institution "for people of all ranks", savings banks have come a long historical path, experiencing ups and downs.

As part of the event, Elena Petrova, the head of the museum department of the North-West branch of the bank, will tell about the very first client of the savings banks and his fate: who is he, the person who “cut the tape”? Was it a coincidence or a pattern in the fact that it was he who made a step into history?

The next online lecture from the series, timed to coincide with the 180th anniversary of the savings business in Russia, will be devoted to the personality of the first manager of state savings banks.

The media partner of the project is the social network VKontakte.

The lectures will be broadcast exclusively in the official group of the Presidential Library on the VKontakte social network and on the Presidential Library’s portal in Live broadcasts section.
