The Presidential Library provides films, video lectures and webinars online

5–12 December 2022

The films and video lectures prepared by the Presidential Library, as well as country's leading film studios, are now broadcast around the clock on the Presidential Library’s portal. The screening is timed to coincide with memorable and significant dates, as well as major events in the Presidential Library.

A video film prepared by the Presidential Library, "Alexander Nevsky – the Patron of St. Petersburg", will be shown marking the Day of Remembrance of the Holy Prince Alexander Nevsky, December 6,. The name of the great Russian prince and commander Alexander Nevsky acquired national significance under the first emperor of all Russia, Peter the Great. St. Petersburg was consecrated by the transfer of the holy relics of the noble prince from Vladimir. The film features several key points on the city map associated with the name of the patron saint of the Northern capital: the Holy Trinity Alexander Nevsky Lavra, the Cathedral of the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God, the State Hermitage Museum. The materials from the collection of the Presidential Library Alexander Nevsky (1221-1263) are also available.

On December 9, marking the anniversary of the beginning of the reign of the daughter of Peter I, it will be possible to watch online the video lecture "Empress Elizabeth Petrovna through the eyes of Catherine the Great". Historian Mikhail Safonov offers to compare two handwritten editions of the "Notes of Empress Catherine II" and find out what Catherine thought and said about her mother-in-law at the beginning of her reign, and what - after 20 years.

The webinar "Establishment of the Order of St. George the Victorious" is timed to coincide with the date of the appearance of one of the most famous awards of the Russian state, which has become a symbol of personal courage. The Order of St. George was established by Empress Catherine II on December 7 (November 26), 1769, a year after the launch of the Russo-Turkish war of 1768-1774. The order involved 4 degrees and was intended to be awarded only for military exploits. The materials related to the history of the highest military award of the Russian Empire - archive documents, monographs, dissertations, photographs, will be shown at the webinar.

Another webinar, the recording of which will be available to portal users, is “Multinational Russia”. The webinar will provide an overview of scientific and popular science monographs about the life and customs of the peoples of Russia, cartographic materials for certain regions of Russia, periodicals, newsreels and visual materials presented in the Presidential Library.

During the week from December 5-11, a whole series of video materials dedicated to space exploration will be broadcast. These are unique newsreels that capture the founder of modern cosmonautics and rocket technology, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, the last minutes before the start of Yuri Gagarin's flight into space; the documentary "Space Pilots", which is based on unique video materials filmed during secret tests at the Research Institute of Aviation and Space Medicine, and the film "The Ascent", dedicated to the moral analysis of human space exploration; as well as a video lecture "106 minutes of Yuri Gagarin: declassified details of the first space flight".
