The Presidential Library’s video lecture to portray Boris Fyodorovich Godunov

3 March 2023

On March 3, 2023, at 11:00 Moscow time, the Presidential Library will host a video lecture Boris Godunov: the First Elected Tsar as part of the Knowledge of Russia project. The event is timed to coincide with the 425th anniversary of the accession to the throne of the ruler who reigned from 1598 to 1605.

Boris Godunov was a bright and ambiguous ruler, whose reign is considered one of the most dramatic periods of Russian history. A visionary and cautious politician, Boris Godunov strengthened and expanded the borders of Russia, built new cities and fortresses, established the patriarchate, supported the development of education.

Dmitry Volodikhin, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Vice-Rector for Research at the Moscow State University of Technology and Management, will deliver a lecture Boris Godunov as a Representative of the Russian Aristocracy.

The presentation of Andrey Pavlov, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Senior Researcher at the Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, will be devoted to Boris Godunov’s policy and its results.

Andrey Kuznetsov, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Culture and Psychology of Entrepreneurship at the Institute of Economics and Entrepreneurship of the Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University, will tell about the lessons Boris Godunov’s successor Vasili Shuisky learned from his reign.  Special attention will be paid to the attitude of the boyars towards Boris Godunov, who did not see neither charisma, nor a halo of holiness in the ruler, considering him the same as them. This was one of the reasons for the collapse of Godunov’s rule, which was subsequently taken into account by Vasili Shuisky, who then created his new pedigree (there is a legend about his dynasty’s going back to the eldest son of Alexander Nevsky).

The video lecture is free. The meeting will be broadcast on the Presidential Library’s portal in the Live broadcasts section in accordance with the program of live events, on the Rutube-channel of the institution, as well as on the pages on the social networks VKontakte and Odnoklassniki.
