Countries of the Oman Peninsula and the Russian Empire: meeting with Ilnur Nadirov at the Presidential Library
On June 15, 2023 at 17:00 Moscow time the Presidential Library will host a meeting with Ilnur Nadirov, a well-known orientalist, semitologist, candidate of historical sciences, researcher of texts in Hebrew, Aramaic, Arabic, Mandaic languages, as part of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
The event is free. The meeting will be broadcast on the Presidential Library’s portal in Live broadcasts section in accordance with the program of live events, on the Rutube-channel of the institution, as well as on the social networks VKontakte and Odnoklassniki.
The meeting participants will learn about the history of visits by travelers of the Russian Empire to the territories that are now known as the United Arab Emirates. In the 19th century, these territories were an association of sheikhs of the southern coast of the Persian Gulf, were under the protectorate of Great Britain and were called "Treaty Oman".
The theme of the event was not chosen by chance. This year the United Arab Emirates is the guest country of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
The meeting with Ilnur Nadirov will be of particular interest to students of oriental studies, Arabists, specialists in international relations, travelers, as well as everyone who is attracted by the Arab culture and history of the United Arab Emirates.
The meeting participants will also be able to visit the exhibition “Arabic Manuscripts. Highlights of St. Petersburg Collections”. Especially for this exhibition, the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences provided copies of the earliest Arabic miniatures that have come down to us - illustrations of the 13th century for literary works, excerpts from the Koran written in Kufic and Maghrib script, richly ornamented pages of the Koran.
Eastern Department of the Gorky Scientific Library of St. Petersburg State University donated copies of old manuscripts depicting the shrines of Mecca and Medina, constellations from the astronomical treatise of the great 10th century scientist Abdurrahman al-Sufi, as well as descriptions of the regions of the Arabian Peninsula and the islands of the Persian Gulf.
The exhibition is available during a tour of the Presidential Library.
