Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev is known to a wide audience primarily as an outstanding chemist, the author of the famous periodic table of elements. But no less significant is his contribution to domestic metrology, which he made as manager of the Main Chamber of Weights and Measures. It was his system for ensuring the uniformity of measurements and metrological reform that were the primary government tasks during the period of rapid development of capitalism and technical re-equipment of Russian industry at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The result of the transformations was the creation of a full-fledged metrological infrastructure, which made it possible to ensure the uniformity of measurements throughout Russia. A national system of units of physical quantities was established and legislated, existing state standards were improved and new ones were created; Fundamental scientific research began to be carried out in this area, the reference base was improved, etc.

At the conference, reports on the relevance of Mendeleev’s heritge for modern Russia will be made by Deputy Head of the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology Evgeniy Lazarenko, President of the Interregional Public Association “Metrological Academy”, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Okrepilov, Vice President of the Interregional Public Association “Metrological Academy" Vladimir Krutikov, Rector of St. Petersburg State Technical University (TU) Andrey Shevchik, Director General of VNIIM named after Mendeleev Anton Pronin, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor Valentina Stolyarova.

The event will be attended by students, young scientists, representatives of the metrology community, business, industrial and educational institutions, government and public organizations. The conference will present materials spotlighting the scale of personality and the fundamental contribution of Mendeleev to the development of not only Russian science, but also metrology, economics, and education.
