25 February 2025

On February 25th, 2025 at 11:00 Moscow time, a presentation of the fourth volume of History of Russia: In 20 Volumes will take place at the Presidential Library of Administrative Directorate of the President of the Russian Federation, as part of the video lecture series Knowledge of Russia. The volume is titled Russia in the 16th Century: The Creation of a Single State and was prepared by the staff from the Institute of Russian History at the Russian Academy of Sciences, the St. Petersburg Institute of History, the Russian Historical Society, and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, as well as other scientists from various scientific centers and institutions, contributed to the preparation of this event.

The fourth volume is divided into two parts. The first part is devoted to the key issues of the history of Russia in the 16th century - the time of the formation of a united Russian state. It examines the domestic and foreign policy of Russia during this period, including the reigns of Vasily III, Ivan the Terrible, and Fyodor Ivanovich. The book also covers important events such as the capture of Kazan, the Livonian War, and the joining of Siberia.

The article analyzes the victories and defeats, reforms and oppression, crises, and their resolution on the path to creating a multi-ethnic state. Special attention is given to the formation of the state's territory, relations with neighboring countries, governance, and the occupation of the population.

The second book of the fourth volume covers important topics in the history of Russia during the 16th century, such as the church, culture, and social structure. It also discusses the history of state formations and peoples in Volga region, North Caucasus, Urals, and Siberia that became part of Russia during this time period.

The chapters devoted to different groups of the population (service people, clergy, merchants, rural people, peasants and serfs), as well as regions, show the process of forming a single state. The changes that took place in culture were aimed at developing a unified cultural tradition that was inseparable from the state ideology. This is how the history and culture of Russia in the 16th century laid the foundations of the future Russian Empire.
