Multimedia exhibition dedicated to by-gone and recent history of the commercial apartment building of Y. B. Buck in the Presidential Library

15–24 June 2017

Multimedia photo exhibition dedicated to the history and current being of the commercial apartment building of J. B. Back, located at 24 Kirochnaya Street, is taking place in the Presidential Library from the 15th to the 24th of June 2017. The exhibition presents recent photographs of the building along with some historical documents related to its construction.

Gaugers’ building was erected on the place of the present one at 24 Kirochnaya Street in 1844. In 1905 the architect Boris Girshovich by request of Julian Back, the engineer of communications, a founder and a publisher of the “Rech” (lit. speech) newspaper, assembled the commercial apartment building in the Art Nouveau style with rococo elements. This house is well known for its floating yard facing the roofed pass-through galleries. Floating courtyard is a technical floor, which is standing on the pillars inside of the inner yard territory: there were usually coal and firewood storage rooms beneath it back in the XIX century. In 2001, the house was included in the “List of newly identified objects of historical, scientific, artistic or other cultural values.”
