The most reading region of Russia will be announced in the Presidential Library

The III “Book policy of the regions” Conference, focused on the problems of promoting a culture of reading in the Russian regions will start its work in the Presidential Library at 1 pm on November 16, 2017.

What do they read in Russia? Are we still the world’s most reading country? The participants of the conference will try to find answers to these and some other questions. The event will be held within the framework of the “Literature and reading” section of the VI St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum. It will be aired live on the Presidential Library website under Live broadcast section.

The objective of the conference is to exchange practical experiences in implementing the regional programs for the development of reading. Experts will discuss the essential conditions for the development of book culture and reading infrastructure in the regions, the measures to improve the socio-cultural indicators of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation. Special attention will be paid to the special aspects of promotion of regional publishers and writers, opportunities for their inclusion in the federal book industry. Experts will also present the most promising projects of 2018.

Polish writer and scholar Janusz Leon Wiśniewski will be the special guest of the conference. As a writer, he made his debut in 2001 with the novel entitled “S@motność w Sieci” translated into English as “Loneliness on the Net,” which topped the bestseller lists first in Poland and then in other countries of the world. He writes the novels, the collected volumes of reasoning, as well as popular scientific articles. Wiśniewski is absolutely confident in the immutable value of the book and reading for the development of modern society.

Among the key speaking appearances in the conference are also the head of the “Granada — UNESCO City of Literature” program Lorca Jesús Ortega (Spain) and General Director of the “Eksmo-AST” publishing group (Russia) Oleg Novikov.

The international composition of the speakers will let considering problems of support and development of reading in a broader information and cultural context.

The results of the “The most reading region” All-Russian Competition organized by the Russian Book Union with the support of the Federal Agency for Press and Mass Communications will be summed on the conference. The competition started in May 2017. 84 regions clamed themselves ready to participate in it. They were required to present the most significant literary project in the region for 2016—2017, as well as relevant information about the development of the infrastructure of books and reading, literary traditions in the region.

An accreditation for the media is carried out until 11 am on November 15, 2017.
