February 28, 2018 at 15:00 a regular meeting of the Presidential Library cinema club will be held within the framework of the Arctic Day. The program includes showing and discussion of the documentary film "General Directorate of the Northern Sea Route. Pages of History", video tour "Icebreaker “Krassin”: 100 years in the history of Russia” and a presentation of a book exhibition timed to the 85th anniversary of the establishment of the Northern Sea Route "Northern Sea Route - the Ice Road to the Future". The exhibition will be presented by Polina Yankovskaya (Intellectual Center – E. I. Ovsyankin Scientific Library of the Northern (Arctic) Federal University).

The Northern Sea Route was first traversed from west to east (with one wintering trip) in 1878-1879 by the Swedish expedition of Nils Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld. The Russian hydrographic expedition led by Boris Vilkitsky made this route from east to west on the icebreakers "Taimyr" and "Vaigach" in 1914-1915. The camp for wintering was expanded at the peninsula of Taimyr.

For one navigation the Northern Sea Route was first passed by an expedition led by Otto Schmidt on the ship “Sibiryakov” in 1932.

In the same year in the USSR, the Main Directorate of the Northern Sea Route – Glavsevmorput’ was established. The management played an important role during the Great Patriotic War, when the Northern Sea Route was the most important transport route, through which warships of the Pacific Fleet were sent to the Barents Sea, as well as transportation of hard coal, timber and other national economic goods. In 1971, the Administration of the Northern Sea Route was established under the Ministry of the Navy. For international navigation, the Northern Sea Route was opened in 1991, after the collapse of the USSR.
