Pyotr Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky (1827-1914)

The collection marks the 195th anniversary of the birth of an outstanding Russian geographer, traveler, and collector; honorary member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1873) and the Academy of Arts (1874); head of the Russian Geographical (1873) and Russian Entomological Societies (1889), member of the State Council of the Russian Empire (1897); an active participant in the preparations for the abolition of serfdom, the organizer of the first census of the population of Russia in 1897, Pyotr Petrovich Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky. The collection includes his memoirs, archival documents about official activities, video recordings, visual materials. Of particular importance are the research of the scientist, as well as fundamental works on geography and statistics, compiled under his editorship (including the multi-volume works "Geography of Asia", "Geographical and Statistical Dictionary of the Russian Empire", "Picturesque Russia", "Russia").

The collection features the materials from the collections of the following institutions: the Russian State Historical Archive, the Russian Geographical Society, the Tambov Regional Universal Scientific Library, the Russian State Library, the National Library of Russia, the State Archive of the Russian Federation, the State Public Historical Library, the Central Naval Library, Centralized library system of the Krasnogvardeisky district (St. Petersburg), Children's Postcard Museum.
