History of Russia: “Bestuzhev Courses: First Women’s University” exhibition, marking 140th anniversary of women’s higher education in Russia, launched in St. Petersburg

The exhibition “Bestuzhev Courses: First Women’s University” in commemoration of the 140th anniversary of the women’s higher education in Russia is running through November 18, 2018 in the State Russian Museum and Exhibition Center ROSPHOTO (St. Petersburg).

The exhibition is dedicated to the first women in Russia to receive higher education. Higher Women’s Courses, also known as the Bestuzhev Courses – was a unique phenomenon in the public life of Russia in the late 19th — early 20th century. Among the professors, who gave lectures there, were such prominent Russian scientists as D. I. Mendeleyev, A. M. Butlerov, A. N. Beketov and others.
