Memory of the World: Exhibition marking the 150th anniversary of the Paris Commune from the "2021: Memorable Dates of History" series presented in Saint-Petersburg

6 April 2021

The State Museum of Political History of Russia (Saint-Petersburg) presents an exhibition marking the 150th anniversary of the Paris Commune from the "2021: Memorable Dates of History" series.

A century and a half ago, France faced a political crisis, caused by the defeat in the war with Prussia and the fall of the power of Emperor Napoleon III in September 1870. Its main result was the appearance of the Paris Commune - the revolutionary government of the French capital. The small exhibition "Vive la Commune!" tells about the place of the Paris Commune in history. It features items from the collections of the State Museum of Political History of Russia.

The State Museum of Political History of Russia, founded in 1919 as the State Museum of the Revolution, preserved a collection of documents and objects related to both the Paris Commune of 1871 and its memory. Some of them are showcased at the exhibition: a certificate of protection issued by the Paris Commune, which insured the security of residence of the Russian aristocrat Zinaida Yusupova-Shovo; a collection of official leaflets of the Paris Commune, published in Paris in 1874; propaganda materials of the International Organization for Assistance to the Fighters of the Revolution in the 1920s -1930s; memorable Soviet postcards and medals.

The exhibition will run in the museum atrium until May 12.
