History of Russia: Exhibition "Suvorov Begins" opened in Saint-Petersburg

19 June 2021

On June 17, 2021, the Suvorov State Memorial Museum launched the exhibition "Suvorov Begins", dedicated to the first steps of the future Generalissimo in the military field. This period of Alexander Suvorov's life is connected with numerous legends. This exposition will help to expose or confirm them.

One of the most famous Suvorov stories is the legend of the silver ruble. Empress Elizaveta Petrovna awarded the young Guardsman Suvorov for excellent guard duty with a silver coin. The exposition features the same coin and provides details of the legendary event.

The exhibition also includes portraits of Suvorov's contemporaries who served at the same time. Among them were the brothers Aleksei, Grigori and Fyodor Orlovs, Ivan and Nikolai Saltykov, Alexander Prozorovsky and Vasili Maikov. The exposition showcases sculptures and portraits of Emperor Peter the Great, Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, Commander Fyodor Vadkovsky and others.

The key exhibit is the uniform of the sergeant of the Semyonovsky Life Guards Regiment. The similar clothes wore the future commander, who entered this regiment in 1742. The officers ordered this uniform specifically for their museum in the early XX century, and now it is in the Suvorov Museum.
