Peoples of Russia: The Russian Museum of Ethnography presents an exhibition project “Volga Bulgaria. The Great Heritage” in Russian cities

Marking the 1100th anniversary since the adoption of Islam by Volga Bulgaria, the Russian Museum of Ethnography presents a mobile exhibition project Volga Bulgaria. The Great Heritage. Unique artifacts from the collections of the Russian Museum of Ethnography will be showcased in Kazan, Ufa, Chelyabinsk.

The heritage of the ancient state, established in the era of early Middle Ages in Middle Volga Region, is preserved in ethnic-cultural traditions of the Tatars, Chuvash, Bashkirs, Besermyan, Udmurts, Mordvins, Mari. The exhibited historical photographs and unique costumes of the XIX – early XX centuries create a gallery of images of cultures of these peoples, as well as the Balkars of the North Caucasus, related to the Bulgars, and the Danubian Bulgarians.

The exhibition features pieces of gold embroidery, leather mosaics, jewelry and unique costume complexes of the XIX century from the collections of the Russian Museum of Ethnography.

The displayed archeological artifacts of the X-XIII centuries, ethnographic monuments of the XIX – early XX century, as well as works by modern artist Azat Minnekayev allow visitors to experience and appreciate the uniqueness of the Bulgar heritage in a new way.

The State Historical Museum, the State Hermitage Museum, the National Museum of Republic of Tatarstan, the National Museum of Republic of Bashkortostan, the State Historical Museum of Southern Ural and the Russian Museum of Ethnography take part in the project which allows to demonstrate monuments of various historical eras at the exhibition and visibly present the succession of traditions of Volga Bulgaria and culture of modern peoples across the centuries.

August 11 – September 4 in the National Museum of Republic of Tatarstan (Kazan);

September 30 – October 23 in the National Museum of Republic of Bashkortostan (Ufa);

November 3 – November 23 in the State Historical Museum of Southern Ural (Chelyabinsk).
