Marking the 350th anniversary of Peter the Great: The exhibition “The Space of Peter to the Space of Russia” presented in Vladimir

19 October 2022

The mobile exhibition project The Space of Peter to the Space of Russia is open in the Chambers of the Vladimir Suzdal Museum-Reserve. It is timed to coincide with the 350th anniversary since the birth of the first Russian emperor. The unique exhibition has been prepared by the Peterhof State Museum-Reserve within the framework of the national project Culture.

Vladimir is the second city of the route, along which the anniversary exhibition moves around the country. The project has started in Pskov, and after Vladimir the exhibition will be brought to the Novgorod Museum-Reserve.

The exhibition is presented as a tale about the life of the reformer in paintings. 16 grand pieces tell about the adolescence and youth of the future monarch, his trips abroad and military triumphs. These works have been created by masters of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts especially for historical reconstruction of celebrations of the 350th anniversary of Peter I.

Visitors to the exhibition will have an opportunity to see authentic objects of the era of big changes. A special goal of the project is to draw parallels between historical painting and items from the collection of the Peterhof Museum-Reserve. The exhibits are as though the canvases have been brought to life: a Dutch astrolabe and a model of Peter I’s boat, Mathematics Course and Research on the Origins of Land published in 1699. Based on these books, the Emperor could test the noblemen, who studied in Europe. Engravings allow visitors to compare the perception of various historical events by Peter’s contemporaries to modern interpretations.

It is symbolic that Peterhof as Peter’s monument and space brings the exhibition project to life. It connects Russian cities into one cultural field that keeps the spirit and energy of Peter’s reforms in order to honour the memory of the great reformer, in the name of the good and prosperity of his Fatherland.

The exhibition will run until October 26, 2022.
