Museums: Vice Admiral Aleksander Nemits’ archive given to the Naval Museum

The unique archive of the outstanding naval commander, Vice Admiral Alexander Nemits was passed over to the Central Naval Museum December 28, 2010. It happened on board of the legendary cruiser Aurora. Photographs, letters and family tree - rarities were brought back from Switzerland by Ivan Nemits, great-nephew of the vice admiral.

During the World War I Alexander Nemits led Mine division, after the February Revolution commanded the Black Sea Fleet, and then began to serve the new Russia. He was the right hand of Vice Admiral Nikolai Kuznetsov, and when he found himself in disgrace, the same fate befell Nemits. He died in Sevastopol in 1967, forgotten by all. His brother emigrated in 1918.

Representatives of the Swiss branch of the family learned about the merits of Alexander Nemits recently, from the book by Bunin "Cursed Days". After that they decided to transfer the archive to St. Petersburg. Part of the documents the Nemits from Switzerland passed over to the Central Naval Museum last year. Now the paper will be examined by the Russian specialists. Photographs and letters of Vice Admiral Nemits will be stored in the new museum building.
