History of Russia: “Battle of the Ice” Museum-Reserve to open in Pskov Region

30 December 2011

The meeting of the Deputy Minister of Culture of Russia Andrei Busygin with the delegation of Pskov Region headed by Alexander Golyshev - the Chair of the State Committee of Culture - turned the spotlight on foundation of the State Cultural Institution “Military-Historical and Natural-Landscape Museum-Reserve “Battle of the Ice” in Gdov District.

“We consider this remarkable site as the fourth battlefield of Russia’s military glory. But as a matter of fact it is the first — both with respect to chronology, and its role for the country”, Alexander Golyshev said.

The Deputy Minister of Culture of Russia expressed readiness to render support in establishment of the museum-reserve. In addition, Andrei Busygin noted that the territory could become a branch of one of the largest historical museums until an independent federal institution is founded. And this is expected to happen in 2013.

An action group addressed the Governor of Pskov Region Andrei Turchak with a proposal to establish a battlefield of Russian military glory in Gdov District - in a place which is closest to the site where the battle of the Russian army commanded by Alexander Nevsky against the Teutonic Knights took place.
