IT and Society: Google introduces changes to its search engine’s mechanism

5 December 2011

Google Corp. has announced some new methods added to the search algorithm, which will enable the company to boost the quality of Internet search and, on the other hand, will hint website owners how to better optimize content in order to raise the performance of their web-projects in Google’s search index.

According to the company, introduced improvements enhance indexing of large documents, extend the mechanism of auto search, and better define so-called “parked” domains and link-farms, lowering their performance in the ranking. The company’s representatives say that such minor improvements the company conducts on a monthly basis, but it was now decided to make them known publicly, talking about the essence of performed work.

Google says that the company has redefined the search results on the most frequent requests to make them more relevant. Some changes were introduced to related queries and requests featuring homonyms. The company adds that innovations have touched user-generated content as well: pages with the original user-generated content will see even greater rise in the rankings.

The company’s blog reads that since the beginning of this year, Google’s engineers have implemented more than 500 innovations in the search engine.

Google plans to release another set of data on the search engine’s mechanisms in January.
