Museums of the World: The General Conference of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in Brazil

The General Conference of the International Council of Museums 2013 is held on 10-17 August 2013 in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).

Every three years, the International Council of Museums holds the General Conference, which traditionally gathers 3-5 thousand museum professionals from around the world. In the year of the General Conference, all specialized committees also hold their meetings in the framework of the forum. Museum workers from around the world have the opportunity to learn about the core experience of the country and the city. The 2010 conference was held in Shanghai (China).

One of the central themes of the XXIII Forum is the role of museums in the social processes. A particular attention will be paid to the aspect of the modern museum work as a creative use of technology.

The conference is attended by a Russian delegation led by Vladimir Tolstoy, President of ICOM Russia, the general director of the State Memorial and Natural Preserve “Museum-Estate of Leo Tolstoy “Yasnaya Polyana””.

Delegates from more than 100 countries will discuss issues related to the museum exchanges, educational activities of museums and their role in the social and cultural life. By tradition, it will be about heritage conservation and the fight against illicit trafficking of cultural property, as well as the increase of professional standards.
