It is described the defensive battle of the united Russian army 4-6 ( 16-18) August with Napoleon's army as a result of which it was left Smolensk, and Russians were forced to continue the retreat to Moscow.

It is talking about the battle for the progressive strengthening of the Russian army near the village Shevardino held on August 24 (September 5) 1812, two days before the Battle of Borodino. Mark redoubt French succeeded only with heavy losses; Russians, thanks to the defense, won this time for a better location of its parts.
