Expedition of Soviet polar explorers on the icebreaking steamship Georgy Sedov discovered the western shores of Severnaya Zemlya
On August 25, 1930, a Soviet expedition to explore the Kara Sea discovered the western shores of Severnaya Zemlya. The icebreaking steamship Georgy Sedov left Arkhangelsk towards Franz Josef Land and Novaya Zemlya on July 15, 1930. The group of Soviet researchers was led by the mathematician and geographer Otto Yulievich Schmidt (1891–1956) and Vladimir Yulievich Wiese (1886–1954), a polar explorer and oceanographer.
During their journey, polar explorers explored unexplored areas of the Arctic Ocean: the northern part of the Kara Sea, discovered the islands of Vize, Isachenko (in honor of the microbiologist of the expedition Boris Isachenko), Voronin (in honor of the ship’s captain Vladimir Voronin), Schmidt, the Sedov archipelago (west of Severnaya Zemlya).
The icebreaker reached almost 81 degrees north latitude, however, due to the fact that the further route was closed, it turned back to the south. On September 14, the expedition returned safely to Arkhangelsk, having covered about 10 thousand km and completed an ambitious program of comprehensive scientific research.
Part of the expedition consisting of Nikolai Nikolaevich Urvantsev (1893–1985), Vasily Vasilyevich Khodov (1909–1981) and Sergei Prokofievich Zhuravlev (1892–1937) led by Georgy Alekseevich Ushakov (1901–1963) remained on Domashny Island as part of the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago . For 2 years, a group of polar explorers studied Severnaya Zemlya: they described the geological structure and compiled the first map of the archipelago.
The pioneer of Severnaya Zemlya G. A. Ushakov bequeathed to bury himself on the archipelago. The urn containing the ashes of the outstanding polar explorer was taken to Domashny Island and walled up in a concrete pyramid.
