New national anthem of the USSR performed for the first time

1 January 1944

January 1, 1944 was first formally performed a new national anthem of the USSR.

Before 1944, the national anthem of the USSE was the "International", approved by the Council of People's Commissars back on 10 (23) January, 1918. It was written in 1871 in France and was the anthem of the Paris Commune.

In 1930s launched a contest to write the anthem of the Soviet Union which would have a patriotic tone and reflect in its content the fundamental changes that had taken place in the country over the last decades. In 1938 came up "The Anthem of the Bolshevik Party" (written by Lebedev-Kumach, music of A. V. Alexandrov), which became the basis of a new national anthem. In the poetry contest participated famous poets such as: Dolmatovsky, Bedniy, Bergholz, Simonov, Aseev Isakovsky, etc. The Special Commission chaired by K. E. Voroshilov selected the poems of S. V. Mikhalkov and G. A. El Registan (Ureklyan).

December 14, 1943 in accordance with the decision of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the CPSU (b) the new anthem was adopted. New Year's Eve, the night of January 1, 1944 the people heard on the radio the new anthem.

"Partizanskaya Pravda" of January 1, 1944, said: "... The new anthem is a fiery song of the Soviet people, going to work and to exploits following the way of the founders of the Soviet state - Lenin and Stalin. Born in the harsh battles, the new anthem will be the song of glory, an immortal glory of the single and mighty Soviet Union! ... ".

Ubiquitous performance of the anthem was introduced March 15, 1944.
