Treaty of Valiesar concluded

30 December 1658

20 (30) December, 1658 in the village of Valiesar near Narva (Estonian name Vallisaare, Swedish - Plyusemyunde) between Sweden and Russia was signed the armistice which ended the Russian-Swedish war of 1656-1658.

On the Russian side the treaty was signed by Prince Igor Prozorovsky, Duma nobleman A. L. Ordin-Nashchokin, stolnik I. A. Pronchishchev, government officials G. S. Dokhturov and E. Yuriev; on the side of Sweden - Baron Gustaf B’elke, Baron Benkt Horne, hofrat and burggraf Philipp von Krusenstern.

According to Valiesar Treaty the towns of Estonia and Livonia, occupied by Russian forces during the war, such as Kokenhauzen (Koknese, Tsarevich-Dmitriev); Neuhausen (New Town, Vastselinna); Yuryev (Dorpt, Dorpat, Tartu); Marienburg (Alyst, Aluksne); Anzl (Antsen, Angela); Syrensk (Serenvd, Vaskinarva), Dinaburg (Dvinsk, Daugavpils); Režica (Rezekne); Lyutin (Lupin, Ludzu); Marnauz (Uleh), for the time of the armistice (three years) remained under Russian rule.

Between the states a free trade was restored: the Russians received trade courts in Stockholm, Riga, Revel (Kolyvan), Vyborg, Narva (Rugodiv); the Swedes - in Novgorod, Moscow and Pskov. Both sides released prisoners.

Article 15 of the Treaty established friendly relations between the armies of Sweden and Russia, particularly in view of the upcoming union of these countries against Poland, and Article 17 indicated that in the event of the death of one of the monarchs, his successor was to confirm the treaty in full.

Valiesar Treaty was a major success of Russian diplomacy. Later, due to worsening of the international situation, the Russian government was forced to sign the Treaty of Cardis in 1661, which confirmed the boundary established by the Treaty of Stolbovo in 1617. Russia returned to Sweden the towns of Dinaburg, Kokenhauzen, Marienburg, Neuhausen, Dorpt, the fortresses Oreshek and Nyenshantz and, as a result, was cut off from the Baltic Sea.
