The Presidential Library participates in the All-Russian Library Congress in Tula

From May 11-17, 2019 the All-Russian Library Congress - the XXIV Annual Conference of the Russian Library Association (RLA), will be held in Tula. The Presidential Library traditionally takes part in such meetings, and this year is no exception.

The congress theme was “The Concept of Development and Strategic Tasks of Librarianship in Russia”. Professionals of the industry are waiting for hot professional discussions and participation in the development of the concept of librarianship for our country.

Moreover, the Presidential Library has delegated about 10 specialists to the conference. In particular, on May 12 they will hold a master class "The Presidential Library in the Environment of Cultural Heritage: Cooperation of Libraries, Archives and Museums" in the Museum and Exhibition Complex of the Tula Kremlin.

According to the director of information resources of the Presidential Library, chairman of the RLA section “Electronic resources and information and library services” Elena Zhabko, the workshop mainly focuses on museum workers in Tula and Tula Region, local historians, representatives of municipal libraries. In conjunction with the Presidential Library, its organizers are the Association of the Local History and Art Museum (Tula) and the Regional Library and Information Complex (Tula).

Attendees to the master class will learn about the role of the Presidential Library as an integrator of resources of other libraries, archives and museums, about the presentation of archival and museum objects in modern library catalogs, about web archiving and building a regional network of the institution.

As part of individual reports, our experts will also talk about rare books in the digital environment, the main directions of development of the Presidential Library's Internet portal in the context of its demand by users, and library services using electronic resources.

Specialists of the Presidential Library will present a new electronic collection “Tula Region: Pages of History”, which includes archival materials, research, essays, statistical, reference, cartographic and visual materials - a total of about 250 items.

The list includes interesting sources. For example, “The Case of the Construction of a Prison Castle in the City of Tula” (1847), “The Case of the Introduction of Gymnastics and Fencing Teaching in the Tula Gymnasium” (1861), the book “The History of the Ancient Inhabitants of the Tula Province and their Princes” by V. Ivanovsky 1897) and “How the Tula peasant learned to the rational mind” by V. Karpinsky (1918).

In the course of the congress, the Presidential Library will present the research and practice handbook “The Formation of Digital Collections”, published this year. The publication was the result of theoretical research and practical activities of the Presidential Library in the field of the formation of digital collections.

The Presidential Library celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. The institution was opened on May 27, 2009 and functions as a state-wide electronic repository of digital copies of the most important documents on the history, theory and practice of the Russian statehood, the Russian language, as well as a multi-media multifunctional (cultural, educational, academic and informational-analytical) center with status of the national library of Russia.

So far, the Presidential Library numbers more than 800 thousand storage of units. There are about 1000 centers of remote access to the institution’s resources in all 85 regions of Russia and in 30 countries of the world.
