5 November 2020

A regular Presidential Library’s Cinema Club meeting will take place on November 5, 2020 at 16:00. The program includes viewing and discussion of stories under the general title "The Phenomenon of Man" from the archive of the Lennauchfilm film studio.

The event will be broadcast live on the Presidential Library's portal in Live broadcasts section, in the Presidential Library's cinema club group on the VKontakte social network and on the institution's YouTube channel.

For 80 years the Leningrad film studio "Lennauchfilm" has produced more than four thousand films: scientific and educational. But they all in one way or another relate to a person, individuals and communities of people, their private life and common history.

Man is the main subject of interest not only in science, but also in cinematography. Translated from the Greek language, "phenomenon" means a phenomenon that can be imagined, understood and studied. Even in ancient civilization, one can find examples of such an understanding of natural phenomena and the very "human phenomenon" - contradictory, complex, mysterious. This Greek term, but already in the meaning of "exceptional person", sounds directly in the titles of some films, fragments of which will be seen by the members of the cinema club.

Lennauchfilm film studio specialist Yuri Serov will comment on excerpts from different films united by one theme at the meeting.

Thus, the authors of the film "The History of Geometry" reflect on the possibilities of man, on the methods of developing memory and intellect. “Monkey Island” film explores the topic of community behavior. The film “Through the Eyes of a Psychologist. The phenomenon of the crowd" is about emotional infection, mass psychosis, and the film "I am you or are you me?" is about a genetic experiment set by Nature itself - the phenomenon of human twins, their identity and originality.

“The Legend of the Grand Inquisitor” is based on Dostoevsky's novel The Brothers Karamazov, in the center of which is the question: is the highest harmony of a tear even worth one tortured child? The film "Alimentary dystrophies and vitamin deficiencies" tells about life in besieged Leningrad.

The film "Phenomena" explores exceptional personalities and their influence on others, the film "I Want to Live" explores the theme of the private life of a private person with his only, unique fate and character.
