A ceremony in memory of those killed on the fronts of the First and Second World Wars held in London
A commemorative wreath-laying ceremony was held in London at the Soviet War Memorial in the park near the Imperial War Museum. In the context of a nationwide quarantine announced by the British government the day before, the event was held subject to a number of rules and restrictions.
The ceremony was attended by Ambassador Counselor of the Russian Embassy in Great Britain Ivan Volodin, Defence Attaché of the Russian Embassy Maxim Elovik, Representative of Rossotrudnichestvo Anton Chesnokov, members of the diplomatic missions of the Russian Federation, Armenia, the Republic of Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, representatives of the Soviet War Memorial Fund, Head of the Police Department London districts Sazek and Lambeth Colin Wingrove, as well as members of the Victory Volunteers movement. The audience honored the memory of the heroes with two minutes of silence.
In his address, Philip Matthews, Chairman of the Soviet War Memorial Foundation, urged not to forget the 27 million soldiers and civilians of the former Soviet Union who gave their lives in the fight against fascismю
The main ceremony on Remembrance Day in London is traditionally held at the Cenotaph. This year, the monument dedicated to the British who died in World War I celebrates its 100th anniversary, but due to the quarantine, no celebrations took place - public wreath-laying and the Royal British Legion parade were canceled. The ceremony took place behind closed doors. Residents of the country could watch the service on TV and purchase a virtual symbol instead of the traditional red poppy icon.
On the eve of the commemorative event, members of the "Victory Volunteers" movement carried out works to put in order the memorial and the adjacent territory.
The ceremony at the Soviet War Memorial has been organized by the Soviet War Memorial Foundation with the participation of the Society for Assistance to Soviet and Russian Studies, the Victory Volunteers movement, the Russian Embassy and the Rossotrudnichestvo office in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Since 2012, a center of remote access to information resources of the Presidential Library has been opened at the Russian Center of Science and Culture in London. The guests have opportunity to learn about the electronic collection Memory of the Great Victory and the collection First World War (1914-1918). They include official documents, photographs and newsreels, wartime newspapers, books, propaganda publications, collections of articles, testimonies of combatants and home front workers, and much more.
