The Presidential Library marking Russia Day

12 June 2021

Our country celebrates Russia Day on June 12. On this day in 1990, the First Congress of People's Deputies of the RSFSR adopted the Declaration on State Sovereignty. The document proclaimed the supremacy of the Russian Constitution over the legislative acts of the USSR. The holiday received state status in 1994 and the official name Russia Day was assigned to it in 2002.

The history of Russian statehood is one of the priority areas of the Presidential Library's activity. Today, digital collections of the institution number more than a million depository items. These are rare, truly unique materials that spotlight our country’s life in different historical periods. They are available in the electronic reading room of the Presidential Library, as well as remote access centers opened in all regions of Russia and abroad.

Some of the documents are available for review on the Presidential Library’s portal. Of particular interest are four basic collections: State Authority, Russian People, Russian Language and Territory of Russia.

The development of Russian constitutionalism is spotlighted in the collection Constitution - Basic Law. It contains drafts and full texts of all the constitutions of our country in different eras. The pages of the draft Basic Law of 1993 illustrate Boris Yeltsin's handwritten amendments to the text of the constitution. The collection, in particular, includes digitized abstracts of dissertations that reveal the topic of national constitutionalism.

The Presidential Library’s collections and its official portal contain the text of the Constitution of the Russian Federation as amended and adopted as a result of a nationwide vote on July 1, 2020.

The Presidential Library in the exhibition hall contains the only copy of the inaugural copy of the Constitution, which all the Presidents of the Russian Federation take the oath on. The electronic copy of this document is available on the Presidential Library’s portal.
