The Presidential Library’s video lecture marked the 300th anniversary of Yekaterinburg

On October 24, 2023 a lecture dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the city of Yekaterinburg was held in the Presidential Library as part of the video lecture Knowledge of Russia.

Yekaterinburg is the fourth most populous city in Russia, the largest economic, administrative, cultural, scientific and educational center of the Urals.

At the video lecture, Evgeniy Shchepin, a history teacher at the Russian State Vocational Pedagogical University of Yekaterinburg, presented essays on the 300-year history of the city. He talked about the foundation of the city at the beginning of the 18th century, about the role of Emperor Peter I, the Russian artillery engineer Vasily Tatishchev and the military engineer Georg Wilhelm de Gennin in the formation of Yekaterinburg as an important economic and cultural center in the 18th–19th centuries. He also talked about Yekaterinburg during the Soviet period, when the city was called Sverdlovsk, its modern development from 1992 to 2023 and significant events in the history of the region.  

Doctor of Cultural Studies, Professor, Director of the Institute of Educational Strategies Irina Murzina talked about the past and present of Yekaterinburg: about the educational dimension.

Svetlana Voronova-Orenburgskaya, Candidate of Historical Sciences, senior researcher at the Department of Scientific Expertise of the Presidential Library Foundation, joined the video lecture.

The Presidential Library’s portal features the collection dedicated to the 300th anniversary of Yekaterinburg. Here are presented electronic copies of official documents, archival materials, reference books and guides, studies, visual and cartographic sources telling about the history of the city from the 18th century to the present.
