13 February 2025

On February 13, 2025, the Presidential Library hosted a lecture dedicated to Admiral Fyodor Ushakov (1745-1817). The lecture is part of the Knowledge of Russia video series.

Sergey Chernyavsky, chairman of the scientific council of the Russian State Historical Archive and chief specialist of the organizational and methodological department, spoke about the life and achievements of this invincible Russian naval commander. He discussed Ushakov's biography, his service in the navy, his military career, and the process of his canonization and glorification as a saint.

The future admiral, Fyodor Ushakov, began his journey at sea in the northern capital. From 1761 to 1766, he studied at the Naval Noble Cadet Corps in St. Petersburg and, after successfully graduating, began serving in the Baltic Fleet.

Fyodor Ushakov served on almost all the seas where Russia had a naval presence or where its interests were involved. As commander of the Black Sea Fleet from 1790 to 1798 and the Russian-Turkish squadron in the Mediterranean from 1798 to 1800, Admiral Ushakov won five major battles and never suffered a defeat.

In 2024, a monument was erected to this great Russian naval leader in St. Petersburg's Labor Square.
