28 October 2010

On October 28 2010 the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Library hosted the conference called “Cultural Heritage: creation of regional electronic information resources of cultural institutions”. It was for the first time that librarians, archivists and museum workers from 50 regions of the Russian Federation gathered to jointly discuss issues concerning digitization of the holdings and uniting them into regional electronic information resources. These actions will enable each and every citizen of Russia to familiarize himself with the cultural heritage of the country via Internet.

The conference marked the beginning of the interdepartmental cooperation between archives and institutions of cultural sector within the framework of resolutions adopted by the Council under the President of Russia on Information Society Development in the Russian Federation of July 8 2010.

One of examples of such collaboration has become signing of the Cooperation Agreement between the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Library and the Russian State Historical Archive. During the scientific and practical conference was launched the second annual Working meeting focused on foundation of regional branches of the Presidential library. This theme was in the spotlight of one of three sections.

To date there is an urgent need for creation of common descriptive standards of library, archival and museum storage units in order to facilitate search and access in electronic catalogues. This and other problems were also brought into focus after the conference at the following sections: “Priorities in automation of govt archives” and “Development of museum information technologies as basics for ensuring access to the cultural heritage to citizens”.

Participants of the conference familiarized themselves with modern equipment for creation of electronic resources. In particular, was demonstrated the work of the scanner which produced 3D-models of museum exhibits.

The Working meeting attracted delegations from all over Russia, namely representatives of regional administrations, ministries and departments of culture, regional museums and archives departments, central regional libraries. The event was co-organized by the Federal Archival Agency, the Union of Russian Museums and the ELAR Corporation.

The First All-Russian Working Meeting on foundation of branches kicked off on October 28 2009 at the Presidential library. In accordance with the order of the President of the Russian Federation of June 18 2007 branches of the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Library will be opened in all regions of the Federation.
