The Presidential Library has celebrated the 150th birthday anniversary of P. A. Stolypin

April 10, 2012 the Presidential Library hosted the events timed to the 150th birthday anniversary of tsarist Russia Prime Minister, P. A. Stolypin. The same day took place the grand opening of the exhibition "The Public Mood of the Soul", devoted to the person whose anniversary is celebrated; historians specializing in the study of P. A. Stolypin’s heritage delivered lectures about his work to students.

The opening ceremony was attended by representatives of the library’s partners in organization of the exhibition - the specialists from the Stolypin Heritage Study Foundation, the National Library of Russia, the Russian State Historical Archives and other institutions. The head of Stolypin’s Foundation, P. A. Pozhigailo, donated to the Presidential Library scientific papers of the Foundation’s specialists that had been released within 13 years of its existence. Director of the Stolypin Volga Institute, D. F. Ayatskov, greeted the audience through videoconference.

As noted in her speech Director General Deputy of the Presidential Library, E. D. Zhabko, the main difference and advantage of the exposition, "The Public Mood of the Soul" is its multi-media aspect. Modern equipment has allowed to accommodate on a limited exhibition space, numerous electronic copies of valuable archival documents, photographs, newsreel documentary fragments.

The exhibition features a unique shooting, that had captured the prime minister while traveling with the emperor Nicholas II. For the first time the general public has access to rare footage taken at the celebrations in Kiev, in August 1911, just days before the death of Stolypin. There are also archival documents relating to the history of Stolypin’s kin, family albums. Visitors to the exhibition saw a facsimile of Stolypin’s notebook, which he personally filled out till the end of his life.

In the course of the day, the students of St. Petersburg's universities were given lectures by experts specializing in the study of Stolypin’s heritage. The president of the Stolypin Heritage Study Foundation, P. A. Pozhigailo and Deputy Head of the Department of History of Russia, St. Petersburg State University, Doctor of Historical Sciences M. F. Florinsky, told the students about the activities of the reformer, the significance of his ideas in the history of our country.

St. Petersburg students have been virtually joined by students from Saratov; Associate Professor of History of the Russian statehood and law, from the Volga Institute, S. L. Merzlyakov, reported on the activities of Stolypin in office of the Saratov governor.

The open lectures will be broadcasted live on the library’s Internet portal and available to everyone who is interested. Video recordings of the lectures will be presented on the portal and the electronic reading room of the Presidential Library.

Timed to the anniversary date, the collection "Pyotr A. Stolypin" has been developed by the Presidential Library specialists. The collection includes documentary material relating to his life and work, including correspondence, texts of his speeches as chairman of the Council of Ministers, a member of the State Duma, as well as studies and sketches devoted to him. Specially highlighted are the documents related to the assassination of Stolypin. The materials of the collection are available in the electronic reading room and the library’s portal.

The celebration of the anniversary of Stolypin in the Presidential Library is a part of the Year of Russian history, declared by the decree of the President of the Russian Federation in order to attract public attention to the national history.
