The Presidential Library presents “Russia through a train window”
September 17, 2013 at the Presidential Library opened a photo exhibition "Russia through a train window." This is a joint project of the "Russian Railways" and the famous photographer Anton Lange, designed to show a complete image of Russia, its beauty and grandeur through the eyes of a traveler.
The exhibition of works by the master helps to take another look at the geographical features of our country, the unique features of the cultural and historical heritage and the lives of Russians. During the existence of the project, the photographs by Lange have been shown at more than 30 venues in Russia, as well as in Cairo, Vancouver, Geneva, Paris and other cities.
"Russia through a train window" is on display in St. Petersburg for the first time. As it was noted at the opening ceremony, it was not by accident that the Presidential Library was chosen to host the debut. The chairman of the Tourism Committee of St. Petersburg, Alexander Shapkin noted that this emphasizes the statehood nature of the photographer’s approach, his focus on the most complete and objective demonstration of Russia’s development. Deputy Head of the October Railway, Vladimir Odintsov and President of the St. Petersburg University of Communications, Victor Lobko said that the exhibition showcasing the life of the country from the train window is a sort of encyclopedia of Russian regions.
The exhibition organizers donated to the first national e-library in the country the album, containing numerous photos, taken during the expedition, as well as a series of videos on the photo trip. The materials obtained by the library will be digitized and made available on the website of the national repository. Thus, residents of the country will have an opportunity to virtually visit the exhibition from their PCs or come to one of the offices libraries which are today more than 50 in Russia and 14 abroad. At the opening it was pointed out that it is the Presidential Library which holds the photo archive of Lange’s predecessor, author of the first color photographs of the Russian Empire of the early 20th century, Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky.
"I am honored to deliver the works to the Presidential Library, noted the photographer Anton Lange. – It is a guarantee that the book will not disappear, and even if someone a hundred years later wants again to take a picture of the whole Russian and compare his photos with the works of predecessors, he will be able to find this book too."
The exhibition will run until 10 October 2013. To visit, please call (812) 334-25-14, e-mail: excursion@prlib.ru.
