The Presidential Library became a venue for the “Cultural and Historical Values of Staraya Ladoga” conference

On June 3, 2016, in the Presidential Library hosted an international scientific-practical conference entitled the "Cultural and Historical Values of Staraya Ladoga".

As the governor of Leningrad region Alexander Drozdenko pointed, the conference became a milestone event in the series of ones dedicated to the 900th anniversary of the Ladoga Fortress, and Cathedral of the Dormission at the Holy Assumption Nunnery.

It was stressed that the historical and cultural heritage of the Staraya Ladoga is represented by more than 100 monuments of VIII-XIX centuries. Among them are the 75 objects of federal significance, including 55 - of archaeological heritage. The ensembles of the Staraya Ladoga fortress, the Nikolsky male and the Assumption female monasteries are belonging to the most significant of these.

The complex of monuments of history, culture and architecture of Staraya Ladoga and its local area are of outstanding national and international historical, cultural, natural, museum, tourist, educational and research value.

Director General of the Presidential Library Alexander Vershinin, in turn, highlighted that the anniversary events became another opportunity to draw attention to the development of Staraya Ladoga as the historical center of the country.

Three years ago on the initiative of the governor of Leningrad Oblast the works on restoration of the monuments started in the Staraya Ladoga. “Over the past four years about 330 million rubles have been allocated on the project, restoration and other works in Staraya Ladoga, - said Alexander Drozdenko. - This year, another 94 million rubles will be allocated for the restoration works from a budget of the Leningrad Oblast, and this amount will be used for the restoration of the North Tower, Northeast and Southeast parts of a fortress wall, the St. George and Dmitry Savrovsky churches and other objects."

The cooperation between the Presidential Library and the Staraya Ladoga Museum was particularly emphasized at the conference. In 2014, the cooperation agreement was signed, under which an active cooperation on handing unique material has been established between the two institutions. For example, the Presidential Library within the framework of cultural and educational action entitled the “Revival of the Ancient Capital of Russia basing on the First Color Photographs” provided the Staraya Ladoga State National Park and Museum with electronic copies of photographs of Staraya Ladoga from the beginning of the XX century, taken by Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorsky. A reach illustrative material about todays Staraya Ladoga could also be found at the Presidential Library stock. It includes the photographs of the St. George Church.

The Presidential Library has prepared for the conference an exhibition on which the castle and monastery are shown on the first color photographs of the early twentieth century, the course of archeological excavations and restoration work are demonstrated, the new monuments in the Old Ladoga are presented. In the conference framework the Presidential Library has produced The Capital City movie, reflecting what a great role in the history of its country the northern capital of Russia played, remaining for future generations a stronghold of the invincible Russian spirit. “The Capital City” movie is included in the Presidential Library’s online broadcasts schedule of documentaries about the life, history and the development of Russian regions. The movie is available for all those who are interesting in the national history.
