The interactive Olympiad for school students starts in the Presidential Library

From September 21 to November 30, 2017, the Presidential Library will conduct the first round of “Russia in the Electronic World” Annual Interactive School Olympiad in History, Social Studies and the Russian Language Arts. Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia provides the traditional support for the project.

“Russia in the electronic world” Olympiad, which this year is held for the eighth time, has managed to prove itself as one of the most significant projects for school students. From September to March, children will perform assignments on History, Social Studies and the Russian Language Arts of the three Olympiad stages, two of which will be held remotely. According to the tradition, the last stage gives participants the opportunity to test their knowledge in presence: the most capable and knowledgeable schoolchildren of St. Petersburg will meet at 3 Senate Square, students from other cities of Russia — on the premises of remote electronic reading rooms of the Presidential Library. Currently, these venues operate in 85 regions of the country. Owing to this format, it made possible to embrace an entire regional network of Russia and even the countries of the near abroad — to participate in the Olympiad it’s only needed to get registered on the Presidential Library website. About 5000 schoolchildren from Russia and 10 foreign countries took part in the Olympiad last year (from USA, Algeria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkey).

For successful fulfillment of the tasks of the school Olympiad “Russia in the Electronic World” the participants will have to actively use the Presidential Library fund, which includes more than 550,000 digital copies of printed and archival materials, audio and video recordings, authors’ abstracts and other documents reflecting the centuries-old history of Russian statehood, theory and the practice of law, as well as the Russian language as the state language of Russian Federation.

A competent jury, which includes authoritative scholars and professorship of universities in St. Petersburg, will grade student’s works to judge their knowledge. Winners and awardees will receive memorable prizes and gifts from the Presidential Library.

What is more, the Olympiad of the Presidential Library on History and Social Studies is included in the draft Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation “On the approval of the List of Olympiads for School Students and their levels for the 2017/18 school year.” This means that winners and awardees in History and Social Studies will have the opportunity to receive advantages on admission to higher educational institutions. School students who won the Olympiad in the Russian Language Arts will have a priority enrolling Herzen Pedagogical University.
