Established the Order of Merit for the Fatherland

On March 2, 1994 under the decree of the RF President was established the Order of Merit for the Fatherland. The Order is the second by significance of the Russian state awards after the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called.

The Treaty of San Stefano concluded

February 19 (March 3), 1878 in the small town of San Stefano (a western suburb of Constantinople, from 1926 - of Istanbul) was signed a preliminary peace agreement between the Russian and Ottoman empires, which ended the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878.

The monument to Minin and Pozharsky opened in Moscow

On February 20 (March 4), 1818 in Moscow took place the grand opening of the monument to Kuz’ma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky (sculptor Ivan Petrovitch Martos, foundry worker Vasily Petrovitch Yekimov).

USSR and Finland signed the Moscow Treaty

March 12, 1940 in Moscow the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the Republic of Finland signed a peace Treaty marking the end of the Soviet-Finnish ("winter") war of 1939-1940.
 

Committee for State Security of USSR founded

13 March 1954

On March 13, 1954 under the Decree of the Supreme Soviet Presidium of USSR by sorting out of the Ministry of Home Affairs of the USSR a series of agencies, services and departments was created the union-republic body of the state security (KGB) under the Council of Ministers of the USSR.

The Peace of Riga signed

18 March 1921

March 18, 1921 in Riga the Russian and Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republics (RSFSR and the USSR) on the one side, and Poland on the other side, peace treaty was signed, ending the Soviet-Polish war of 1919-1921.
