The action takes place partly at the front, partly in the Moscow captured by the French army. The plot of the play unfolds around a dramatic episode associated with the family of the landowner AP Korostylev. The speeches of historical figures are written by the playwright on their letters or on the surviving documents. Among the actors are historical figures: MI Golenischev-Kutuzov, FV Rostopchin, MB Barclay de Tolly, AP Ermolov, Napoleon I, David Davydov, PI Bagration VA Zhukovsky. The premiere took place on November 7, 1902, in the People's House of the Guardianship of People's Sobriety (St. Petersburg) .
