On the postcard picture of the Council Hall in the village of Cherkes-Kermen, the cave town of Eski-Kermen, located at 14 km south of Bakhchisarai. The city was founded at the end of the 6th century AD. e. as Byzantine fortification and existed until the end of the 14th century. The medieval fortified city is built on a table-like mountain plateau, bounded by cliffs up to 30 m high. A small settlement of Cherkes-Kermen is located on the north side of the town of Eski-Kermen. It existed from the period of late antiquity to the early 70s of the 20th century. Cherkess-Kermen has a large number of caves and many of them are well preserved. In good condition, a Christian church with traces of wall painting, an extensive hall for judgments and public gatherings (the Council Hall), as well as many caves that served as shelter. In Cherkes-Kermen, a complex of a siege well of the 6th century, with a staircase of six marches and eighty steps, with a twenty-meter corridor leading to a cave where drinking water was accumulated, was preserved. The territory of the cave city of Eski-Kermena is included in the Bakhchsarai Historical and Cultural Reserve .
