In the photo: a souvenir badge "Velikie Luki". The icon is rectangular in shape, in the center on a red background, a relief symbolic image of the obelisk with a star on top. In the left part of the icon the inscription is vertical: "Great", on the right side - the inscription is vertical: "Luke". Yellow metal. Stamping. Red enamel. The size is 31x10 mm. Pin fastening. On the reverse side - the brand of the manufacturer: Polotsk City Industrial Complex (Vitebsk region). Location: From a private collection. - On the souvenir badge "Great Luke" depicts the Obelisk of Glory, located in the center of Velikiye Luki, on the left bank of the Lovat River, on the eastern bastion of the Velikie Luka Fortress. Obelisk of brown limestone, brought from the island of Saarema, 23 meters high, on top of a five-pointed star, 3 meters high. The author is the Estonian sculptor Mart Port. It was built on the decision of the Council of Ministers of the Estonian SSR, the opening of the monument took place on July 30, 1960. The Obelisk of Glory symbolizes the strength of the military brotherhood, is an architectural embodiment of the unshakable fact that joint efforts of soldiers and officers of different nationalities have been based on the common Victory. The Velikie Luka operation took place from December 13, 1942, to January 18, 1943, by the forces of the 3rd Shock Army under the command of Lieutenant-General KN Galitsky, in which the 8th Estonian Rifle Corps participated in the liberation of the city. October 28, 2008 the city of Velikiye Luki was awarded the honorary title "City of Military Glory" .
