In 1895, in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the City of 1870, the Nizhny Novgorod City Duma decided to "put a monument to Emperor Alexander II on one of the best squares of the city for city funds, allowing also the voluntary donations of local citizens." By 1900 the sculptor A. V. Kurpatov executed a draft of the monument, and the City Council opened a subscription for voluntary donations. The monument was opened on June 16, 1906, on the 36th anniversary of the Town Council. The sculpture depicts Emperor Alexander II full-length with his head uncovered and in an ermine robe dropping from his shoulders to his heels. On the front side of the monument there is an inscription: "To Tsar liberator Alexander II". After the October Revolution, the figure of the king on a pedestal was replaced by a plinth tribune, and during the NEP, its place was occupied by a street lamp .
