At the beginning of 1812, the 34th Jaeger Regiment, commanded by Pillar, was part of the 3rd Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division in the 2nd Infantry Corps of the 1st Western Army. Participated in the rearguard battles near Vitebsk and Smolensk. In the battle of Borodino at the head of the jaeger brigade, he repulsed the attacks of the French and made bayonet counterattacks.
