In 1812, while in the forefront, Kern covered the retreat of the First Army from Vilna to Drissa and valiantly participated in the battles near Smolensk and at the village of Gideonova. In the battle of Borodino was deported to the village of Utitsa to reinforce the left flank. After the battle at Tarutin, Kern was appointed to the militant avant-garde of Miloradovich and especially distinguished himself in the battles at Vyazma and at Krasnaya.
