The town of Ryurikovo is 2.5 km away from the historical center of Veliky Novgorod. The history of the ancient settlement is connected with the stage of the formation of the Russian statehood and the beginning of the reign of the Rurik dynasty. Archaeological excavations refer to the emergence of a fortified settlement-fortification by the second half of the 9th century. The first mention of the town in the Novgorod chronicles appears in 1103 in connection with the laying of the stone church by Prince Mstislav Vladimirovich.
