Mamayev Kurgan is a hill on the right bank of the Volga River in the Central District of the city of Volgograd, where fierce battles took place during the Battle of Stalingrad from September 1942 to January 1943. In memory of the victims of the Great Patriotic War, in 1959-1967. under the guidance of the sculptor EV Vuchetich, a memorial ensemble "To the Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad" was erected on the Mamayev Kurgan with the main monument "Motherland Calling!". The composition of the ensemble consists of: an introductory composition-the high relief "Memory of Generations", the alley of pyramidal poplars, the area that stood to death, the walls-ruins, the Heroes' Square, the monumental relief, the hall of military glory, the area of ​​the Tribulation, the main monument "Motherland Calls!", The Military Memorial a cemetery, a memorial arboretum at the foot of the Mamayev Kurgan. The length of the entire complex from the foot to the top of the hill is 1.5 km, the total area is 26 hectares. This is the largest monument in the world dedicated to the events of World War II .
