The first monument at the place of rest of Emperor Peter I was built in 1817 and was a brick obelisk designed by the architect P. Tarasov.The surviving monument was built in 1849 in honor of the 140th anniversary of Poltava The author of the monument is the famous Russian architect and artist Alexander Pavlovich Bryullov (1798-187 7), the brother of Karl Bryullov, all sculptural parts of the monument were made in St. Petersburg in the workshop of I. Hamburger by electroforming, the pedestal is made of metal sheets and is crowned with military symbols symbolizing the rest of Emperor Peter the Great, the helmet of the ancient Russian princes, crowned with a laurel wreath, a sword placed on a shield.In the center of the facade part of the obelisk there is a high relief image of the two-headed eagle - the emblem of the Russian Empire. On the lower part of the pedestal there is a high relief image of a sleeping lion. The monument is surrounded by a low metal fence with columns in the form of guns, buried in trunks in the ground and connected together by metal rails on metal brackets with vegetative ornament. The total height of the monument is about 7.2 meters. In the upper part there is an inscription: "Peter I rested here after his exploits on June 27, 1709". On the back there is a plaque with the inscription: "It will be built on June 27, 1849. In the reign of Emperor Nicholas I-th ». It is one of the main attractions of the center of Poltava .
