It was built for the needs of the Karaite community in Kiev at the expense of tobacco tycoon S. Cohen in 1892-1902. The project was designed by architect V. Gorodetsky in the Moorish-Arabic style. The structure was decorated with a wonderful dome and extraordinary beauty molded works of the Italian E. Salem with the use of quite expensive at that time material - cement. The main facade is underlined by a monumental portal and a cornice. The walls of the facade and interiors are decorated with imitation of stone carvings, molding in the form of arabesques. Since 1926, the building of the former kenasy was the institution of political education, later - the puppet theater, since 1952 - the cinema "Zorya". In 1968 the building was reconstructed. At present it is occupied by the National Union of Theater Workers of Ukraine, and also since 1981 the House of the actor is located here.
